Tolleston Before Gary

Indiana Landmarks' February 17, 2021 article stands out partly for where it begins: before Gary's better-known steel narrative. The congregation's earliest services date to 1863, when German Lutheran immigrants came to Tolleston for railroad work, grounding the church in a settlement history older than the city that later absorbed it.

That longer timeline is a major reason to keep St. John's in view. It shows that Gary inherited older religious and neighborhood geographies rather than beginning from a blank industrial slate.

A 1923 Gothic Landmark In A Changing Neighborhood

As Gary's mills pulled more residents into the area, St. John's expanded its campus with a 1914 school and then the present 1923 church. Indiana Landmarks credited the new building to German immigrant architect Julius Kaaz, whose dual-towered Gothic design still stands out strongly in Tolleston.

That architectural ambition ties neighborhood congregational life to a period when sacred buildings were used to declare confidence, permanence, and civic standing on Gary's west side.

Preservation Through Congregational Stewardship

The 2021 Indiana Landmarks story also stressed how the church adapted as Tolleston changed, including efforts in the 1960s to welcome African American families during a period of white flight. That adds social depth to the site well beyond style and age.
