Signals

How public research pages and extended workspace Signals help you follow newer coverage, public attention, and network activity around the same place without leaving the record behind.

Documentation Summary

Signals at a glance

Updated

March 23, 2026

Public layer

Research article pages can show a recent coverage slice tied to the place being documented.

Workspace layer

Members can open extended Signals inside workspace location records for a broader current-awareness layer around the same place.

Best use

Use Signals when you want to see whether a place is quiet, active, or newly receiving attention beyond the baseline article.

Why it matters

Signals keep newer coverage attached to the same place record instead of forcing a second research trail somewhere else.

1. Public articles can carry a recent coverage slice

Research article pages can surface a recent coverage slice directly beneath the main narrative when matching activity exists. That gives the public record a current-awareness layer without turning every article into a running news feed.

The public version is meant to be a quick read of what is new around the place, so you can move from the durable record into newer coverage without losing the original context.

2. Workspace Signals extend the same thread

Inside a member workspace location record, Signals go further. The location keeps the map, Sanborn Maps, notes, sources, and current-awareness layer in the same working environment, so follow-up stays attached to the place itself.

That makes Signals more useful as an ongoing research tool. It is meant to gather a broader mix of newer activity around a place, including coverage, public attention, and public-network discussion across sources such as Reddit, Bluesky, X, and related web activity as the record keeps developing.

3. Use Signals with the rest of the record

  • Open the research article first when you need the steadier narrative, map, and source trail.
  • Use the recent coverage slice to see whether the place has newer public attention right now.
  • Move into the workspace when you want a longer signals view and a stronger follow-up workflow around the same site.
  • Use the Watchlist Blog when a place already has a reporting thread that should be read beside the research article.
