Built For Black Gary At Full City Scale

Indiana Landmarks' May 1, 2024 release emphasized that Roosevelt opened in 1930 as one of only three Indiana high schools constructed exclusively for Black students. At its peak, the school served more than 3,000 students and became a major point of pride for Gary's Black community.

That scale matters. Roosevelt was part of the city's social and political formation, not just its educational system, and its size still communicates how central Black Gary was to the life of the steel city.

From Operating School To Endangered Landmark

The building's present crisis grew out of a very recent break. Indiana Landmarks reported that a failing heat system and burst pipes in February 2019 forced students out of the building, accelerating the campus's shift from functioning school to threatened historic place.

That timeline gives Roosevelt a different feel from long-abandoned landmarks. The structure still sits close to living memory as a school, which makes the gap between recognition and repair more immediate.

Why The Campus Still Holds Public Life

Roosevelt's closure did not erase its public role. On July 8, 2025, the City of Gary announced a two-day Jackson family celebration on the historic Roosevelt campus, showing that the grounds still operate as a meaningful civic stage even without regular school use.

That continued symbolic use shows why the campus still belongs near the center of Gary's public story. Roosevelt remains endangered and physically unresolved, but it is still one of the places Gary turns to when it wants to gather memory, pride, and public attention.
