Whiting's First Catholic Parish

WRHS records Sacred Heart as the first Catholic parish established in Whiting. The early mission served Irish and German Catholics who were worshipping in homes, schools, and rented halls before a permanent building was ready.

That beginning gives the parish extra weight in the city's first institutional buildout. Sacred Heart arrived while Whiting was still becoming a real town.

A Parish That Moved With The City

The Center Street complex was eventually left behind as Whiting expanded westward. That move shows the parish responding to the same population shifts and neighborhood growth that reshaped the rest of the city.

The present church and school plant on LaPorte Avenue belong to a more mature phase of Whiting's development, when the refinery town had grown dense enough to support a larger and more ambitious Catholic campus.

Still Active In A Changed City

Sacred Heart's current website makes clear that the parish remains active and multilingual. That present-day life keeps the church from reading as a frozen survivor of the early oil city.

The building now carries both the memory of Whiting's first Catholic growth and the city's later demographic shifts within the same institution.
