The City Grew Around The Refinery

Whiting's municipal history is unusually direct about the point of change. Standard Oil began buying lakefront land in 1889 because the site worked for rail and water transportation, and the refinery altered the settlement's trajectory almost at once.

Active industrial sites are easy to leave to corporate fact sheets or environmental headlines. A place library can do something different by keeping the refinery tied to local geography, civic life, and the public shoreline next door.
