District Context

Washington Square District enters the city's landmark system as district number 60. The designation date is May 16, 1990, and the official extent note reads Consisting of Washington Square Park; located N. Dearborn St. from W. Walton St. to W. Chicago Ave.; 1892; and the Newberry Library; 60 W. Walton St.; 1892; and 915 to 929 N. Dearborn St.; 1872-1895. Washington Square District allows boulevards, parks, and public-space structure, the relationship between open space and surrounding buildings, and preservation of a designed setting rather than a single object to be studied as part of one protected piece of the city. The parent district record also carries 2 extension notes, which matters when later change pushes beyond the original designation line.
