One Of Hammond's Main Commercial Streets

The National Register nomination frames State Street as one of two primary commercial avenues in Hammond, which is a useful correction to any idea that the city only developed through industrial land and residential blocks. Downtown Hammond had a real retail and office core.

That commercial history is still visible in the surviving buildings. Banks, department stores, hotels, and public buildings keep a longer downtown story readable along a relatively compact stretch of street.

A District For Hammond And The Calumet Region

The district's reach extended beyond Hammond itself. The nomination says State Street served nearby places such as Whiting, East Chicago, and Calumet City, which makes the street a regional commercial landscape as much as a local one.

That broader market helps explain the sophistication of the architecture. Terra cotta facades and larger downtown buildings reflected a city center drawing trade from across the state line and industrial belt.

Downtown In Its Next Phase

The city's downtown South Shore station work adds a contemporary layer to the district. Hammond is explicitly tying walkability, public space, and new transit infrastructure to the future of the city center.

That context gives State Street a stronger present-day role. The district is not only something to document; it is part of the ground Hammond still wants to activate.
