Where The Railroad Watches Were Made

A 1974 Rockford Historical Society driving-tour guide placed the old watch factory among the city's notable industrial stops and identified it as the place where Rockford's famous 17 and 21 jeweled railroad watches were made. The note ties the site to a specific product and to a level of manufacturing prestige that traveled well beyond the city.

The building locates that reputation on the ground rather than leaving it as a detached corporate memory.

A Former Factory In City Hands

By 2023, WIFR described the former watch factory as a city-owned historic building being offered for sale to developers. The long gap between the industrial era and the current project is part of the site's character.

Rockford did not move cleanly from production to reuse here. The factory spent years in the city's possession as a complicated holdover from an earlier industrial economy.

From Industrial Shell To Apartment Plan

The January 20, 2026 WIFR report shows the latest phase clearly: city council approval for a plan to invest $11.5 million and turn the old factory into 24 apartments. The building now tests how much industrial identity can carry into a nonindustrial future.

The watch factory becomes one of Rockford's clearest examples of a former manufacturing landmark moving toward residential reuse without fully shedding the weight of its earlier life.
