A Former Sock Mill On South Main

EPA and Rock River Current both keep the site's identity tied to manufacturing rather than to anonymous blight. This was the former Nelson Knitting mill, part of the South Main industrial edge and part of the city's sock-making story.

The framing keeps the site attached to a specific manufacturing tradition instead of letting it slide into the category of just another condemned building.

Salvage Work Left A Hazardous Interior

EPA's site profile says the asbestos contamination resulted from prior scrapping of metal pipes and other building materials with little or no abatement of the asbestos insulation around them. The point is clear: deterioration alone was not the whole story.

Salvage activity and unmanaged hazardous material made the building more dangerous and harder to recover.

It also helps explain why the site drifted away from preservation talk and toward emergency response.

Cleanup Arrived After The Reuse Dream Faded

EPA's January 2023 announcement marked the building's next phase: a federal cleanup focused on asbestos-contaminated debris and other hazardous waste. Rock River Current reported at the same moment that the interior had been stripped so heavily that demolition now looked far more plausible than reuse.

The former mill therefore reads as a lost industrial place even before the last wall is gone. Its industrial identity survives, but mostly through hazard, vacancy, and memory.
