A Neighborhood Plaza In A Planned Community

Blackhawk Tower Plaza occupied a site along Blackhawk Drive near Indianwood Boulevard. It formed part of the smaller commercial landscape that supplemented Park Forest's better-known town center and served nearby residential areas.

This type of place is historically useful because it records ordinary suburban geography: where residents could reach services, how parking and storefronts met the street, and how commercial activity was distributed through a planned community.

Vacancy, Deterioration, And Demolition

By 2026 the village described the plaza's buildings as defunct, obsolete, affected by long-deferred maintenance, and dangerous to the public. Demolition began June 1 and was expected to take roughly a month, depending on weather.

The loss should be documented plainly. Whatever future value the cleared land gains, the former plaza's physical fabric and evidence of its neighborhood-commercial use are no longer available for rehabilitation.

What Comes After Clearance

Park Forest framed demolition as a way to reduce development costs and attract future investment. At the start of work, however, no redevelopment project had been announced for the property.

The site therefore enters a watch period. Acquisition, requests for proposals, infrastructure work, interim maintenance, and new site plans will determine whether clearance produces reinvestment or a prolonged vacant parcel.
