The new construction does not preserve Tolleston's old school buildings, but it carries the site's public-service role into a broader neighborhood institution.
The Tolleston Opportunity Campus is approaching the moment when renderings and partnership announcements must become daily public service. Crossroads YMCA continues to identify Fall 2026 as the expected opening for its new Gary facility at 1771 Taney Place.
The project replaces rather than reuses the former school buildings. Its continuity lies in the land and its purpose: a site long associated with education is being organized again around youth, health, learning, and neighborhood gathering.

What Is Planned To Open
The campus brings Crossroads YMCA, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana, Methodist Hospitals, the City of Gary, and philanthropic partners into one project.
Plans include a gymnasium, aquatics and wellness facilities, classrooms, childcare, a teaching kitchen, youth development, health access, recreation, job support, and community rooms.
A Rebuilt Public-Service Site
Three buildings were demolished before construction. This is not architectural adaptive reuse, and the old school fabric should not be implied to survive.
The more meaningful continuity is programmatic. The ground remains dedicated to activities that support learning and neighborhood life beyond a conventional school day.
What To Watch At Opening
The opening date, membership and program costs, scholarships, hours, transit access, partner staffing, health-service availability, and long-term operating support will determine who can use the investment.
On-site interpretation should identify Tolleston High and Middle School, the demolished buildings, and the site's place in Gary's educational and racial history.
