Schaumburg’s last Motorola office building gets a housing proposal

The last Motorola office building at Veridian may have a residential future. UrbanStreet Group presented Schaumburg trustees with a concept that retains the roughly 360,000-square-foot atrium structure and converts it into apartments.

Together with a new companion building, the proposal would produce about 300 homes. It also gives the former corporate campus a physical link to the company that once defined it.

What Was Presented

The concept adapts the six-story building and adds a separate residential structure. Interior demolition could begin in fall or winter if approvals and project preparation advance.

The atrium may help solve daylight and circulation problems that make deep suburban offices difficult to convert.

Most of the Motorola campus has already been remade. Keeping the atrium building would let new residents encounter a substantial piece of the site's corporate geography rather than a placeless replacement district.

Reuse could also avoid the material waste and embodied-carbon cost of demolishing another 360,000 square feet.

What To Watch Next

Formal zoning, floor plans, unit count, facade treatment, parking, affordability, financing, and a construction permit remain unresolved.

The building should remain classified as vacant with reuse proposed until those milestones move beyond the conceptual stage.
