Gary’s eleven-day outage makes the electric grid impossible to ignore

Nearly 100 mph winds broke hundreds of poles, but the long restoration turned physical damage into lost food, closed schools, medical risk, and neighborhood-scale hardship.

More than 20,000 Gary customers remained without power eight days after the August 11 derecho, with full restoration then projected for August 25.

By August 20, Gary residents were measuring the outage in spoiled groceries, missed work, school closures, heat, charging trips, and nights without reliable information. The derecho had arrived nine days earlier, but tens of thousands across Northwest Indiana were still waiting for electricity.

The storm was historic. So was the duration of the failure in Gary, where the repair list included roughly 300 distribution poles and 44 transmission poles.

What Failed

The August 11 derecho brought gusts reported at 99 mph in Gary. Trees and lines fell across streets, and NIPSCO described the regional event as the largest outage in its history.

More than 20,000 Gary customers were still without service on August 19. At that point the utility projected substantial completion August 25, later than many nearby communities.

Infrastructure Became Household Cost

Without refrigeration, families discarded food they could not easily replace. Powered medical equipment, air conditioning, internet access, laundry, fuel, and ordinary business operations all became emergency problems.

Gary schools closed after August 13, moving the outage into childcare and work schedules for families across the district.

What The Recovery Record Needs

NIPSCO and public agencies should publish neighborhood restoration sequencing, damaged-pole locations, feeder work, tree conflicts, mutual-aid deployment, and an after-action review.

Longer-term work should test targeted undergrounding, stronger poles and circuits, vegetation management, microgrids, and permanent backup power at schools, libraries, health facilities, and community hubs.
