McDonald’s Park is under construction, but its 2028 opening target and the larger district’s evolution remain distinct milestones.

The Chicago Fire’s new home at The 78 is now a construction story. After a March 3 groundbreaking and a May naming announcement, McDonald’s Park has a defined identity and a 2028 opening target. The stadium’s progress gives the east bank a different status from the newly proposed Sox site across the river. [1][2][5]

A design shaped around soccer

Gensler describes a roughly 22,000-seat stadium with a dedicated supporter section, a steel canopy, and plazas connecting the venue to its setting. Those elements organize both the concentrated match experience and the approach to the building. [3]

The design will ultimately be judged at several distances: from a seat, from the street, and from the riverfront. A memorable bowl can serve the crowd inside while leaving separate questions about how the exterior works between events. Construction makes those questions more concrete without answering them in advance.

Commercial partnerships are advancing too

On June 10, the club announced an extended Wintrust relationship that includes a stadium lending role and designation as a cornerstone partner. That is a specific business milestone alongside the earlier naming agreement. It should not be treated as a complete account of every financing arrangement across The 78. [4]

The distinction is useful because a venue and its surrounding district are different scopes of work. The stadium can have a clear operator and event calendar while adjoining development takes shape on another schedule.

Put the pin at the stadium

Related Midwest places the venue at the north end of The 78, immediately south of Roosevelt Road. Its district extends farther south along the river. A general neighborhood marker can therefore miss the actual stadium construction area by several blocks. [6]

The accompanying place record now maps that northern construction site. It is a location reference, not a ticket gate: the club’s opening target remains in the future. [1]

The next useful updates will document construction milestones, confirmed access arrangements, and an actual opening schedule. For now, the Fire project supplies tangible progress at The 78 while leaving the larger question open: how will a major event destination become part of the daily life of a new riverfront district?
