Appliance manufacturing used to provide thousands of jobs across America. And, although many of the brands like Amana, Whirlpool and Maytag still thrive, there are much fewer factories today. Automation and robotics have made producing appliances faster and more consistent. Now the best jobs in the factories are needed to keep the “machines” working on the assembly line.
Technology built into these “smart” appliances also make in-home repair a lost art. Seemingly, nothing gets fixed anymore but merely is replaced by a component that was made by another machine. It’s a good thing there is no shortage of grandchildren in this world, to show the rest of us how to turn on the washing machine or open the refrigerator door.
